This motorbike tour takes you north of Hanoi to a region of devastating beauty that is free of mainstream tourists.  There are many different hill tribe communities who dress in fabulously colourful clothing, which creates a stunning contrast to the harsh landscape that these hardy people inhabit.

Touring this magical region by motorbike is the only way to do it.  We use motorbikes exactly the same as the locals – semi automatic scooters – 110cc.  If you would like a bigger bike this can be arranged for an additional cost.

The journey from the airport to your hotel will take approximately 45 minutes and is an entertaining experience full of chaotic traffic, distinctive architecture and overloaded motorbikes.

Your afternoon is free to enjoy Hanoi or you could take an optional Hanoi City Tour (half day).  This evening we will gather together for a welcome dinner and a pre-trip briefing.

Day 2

Hanoi – Ba Be

9.00am we depart Hanoi by bus to avoid the traffic and take the car only highway to just past Thai Nguyen.  Here we will meet up with our bikes, which have been transported on a truck earlier in the morning.  We have lunch here before continuing by motorbike.

Our ride takes us on busy country roads through many villages to the peaceful Ba Be National Park.  This area is richly forested and features striking limestone scenery and Vietnam’s largest natural lake.  Tonight we enjoy the hospitality of the Tay minority at our stilt house homestay in Pac Ngoi village.

Distance: 120km (bus) 150 km (bike)

Day 3

Ba Be – Bao Lac

After our homestay breakfast we take an easy walk to the shore of the lake and board a long boat for a relaxing tour on the beautiful lake to admire the tranquil scenery.

Back at the homestay we pack up and jump on the bikes for a short journey out of the park to stop for lunch in a nearby village.  Then it is on the bikes again for a day of picturesque riding through lush greenery, local villages and mountain roads to Cao Bang, the capital of the province bearing the same name and which has a rich history dating back to the 3rd Century.

The province has had a dramatic history of ancient legends, revolution and turbulence and in 1979 the city was entirely demolished by the Chinese.

Distance: 180 km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Bao Lac – Dong Van

We leave Bao Lac and travel through some seriously gorgeous karst scenery that gives us a sensational contrast to the lush farmlands.  This is truly iconic Vietnamese scenery and takes us past a gigantic statue of Ho Chi Minh and numerous communist inspired billboards.

Our ride culminates in a thrilling ride up through the Ma Pi Leng Pass, regarded as the most beautiful pass in Vietnam, stopping for jaw dropping photos of the surrounds.  The road runs on the sides of black limestone mountains, which are typical features of Dong Van Plateau

Overnight in the ancient town of Dong Van, famous for its historic architecture and preservation of age-old customs and habits, intangible cultural values of the ethnic minority groups.

Distance: 100 km

Day 5

Dong Van – Yen Minh

After breakfast you can take a trek up to enjoy the magnificent view from the former French military tower and then return to town to enjoy some of the best coffee in Vietnam.

Our ride today is through Dong Van’s stone plateau which features dramatic and stark scenery.  We take a tour of a H’mong ancient palace in the Sa Phin Valley.  Plenty of opportunities for photos today.

Distance: 50 km

Day 6

Yen Minh – Hoang Su Phi

An early start today, with winding roads taking us down the valley and along majestic rivers through the town of Ha Giang.  We continue south on the highway for a further 45km where we take a country road to a comfortable and isolated resort.

Day 7

Hoang Su Phi – Hanoi

We went on the North Vietnam Explorer motorbike tour for our honeymoon. Best decision ever! We rode mountain roads, trails and discovered the less touristy side of Vietnam which we loved. Not being hugely experience travellers Megs went out of her way to make things as easy and as non stressful as possible. Was incredible and amazing, cannot recommend enough!
